Day seventy seven - Dufton to Alston

 16th May.

Another fine day, the forecast suggested showers in the afternoon but although it threatened at times it stayed dry but quite windy.

Path from Dufton
A steady climb up towards Cross Fell, the highest point on the Pennine Way.
The Lake District hills were hidden today but the golf ball on Great Dun Fell appeared.
Up and down a couple more times and then the climb to Cross Fell.

It was cold and windy on the top so I went down to Greg's Hut for lunch where it wasn't windy but still cold.
There is a Land Rover track all the way from Greg's Hut to Garrigill and it feels like about 12 miles across grouse moor, which means there is no wildlife and not many grouse either.
It was a relief to reach Garrigill after what in reality was only about six miles.

There is a really nice walk down the infant River South Tyne to Alston, only slightly blighted by a rash of stiles.

Tuesday is early closing day in Alston.

19.5 miles walked 1000 meters ascent.
