Day seventy eight - Alston to Twice Brewed

 17th May.

A fine sunny start to the day but high cloud moved in from the west in the afternoon, probably a good thing or it would have been too hot.

Shop in Alston
I decided to abandon the Pennine Way for a while today as I am trying to get to Kirk Yethholm by Saturday evening so I carried on by the river on the South Tyne Trail.

The trail follows the track of the old Haltwhistle to Alston railway part of which has a narrow gauge heritage railway running on it.
Buffet car café
The railway ends at Slaggyford where there's a buffet car café, unfortunately shut.

The line crosses some deep ravines spanned by viaducts.

And then there is the huge Lambley viaduct accross the South Tyne

TheWalk continues to Haltwhistle where I headed up the hill by the Haltwhistle Burn, a lovely walk following the track of an old mine railway.

To reach the Roman road that runs across the country south of Hadrian's wall.
Up then to Hadrian's wall itself which I followed for a couple ofiles to Twice Brewed, a fine pub but little else.

21 miles walked 600 meters ascent.
