GR 11 Day 44 La Jonquera to Mas Pils

18th July

A bit warm
An even earlier start, stumbling around in the dark! The plan was to walk in the morning then shelter up for a while continuing when it cooled down, it seemed like a good idea.
La Jonquera
Up the hill as usual, at least it was relatively cool. It was a long time until the sound of the motorway and railway disappeared.
A nice picnic site but no water
The Ermita de Santa Llúcia has a dry water point, no wonder the hermits moved away.
DC 6 remains
On up to the summit plateau at Puigcerda dels Falguers. A bit further down the other side there are the remains of a DC 6 which crashed in 1986.
Castell de Resquesens
According to the book there was supposed to be a bar/restaurant at Resquesens, but there isn't, even the waterpoint was dry.

The noise of the cicadas today was almost deafening.

Els Vilars
A climb up again before a long descent to Els Vilars, a little hamlet (unusual, no church) with nothing but a waterpoint.
Loading cork
The plan was to stay in the shade here and move on later but the flies thought it was a good idea as well. As soon as I stopped they swarmed around.
Cultivation Spanish style
After about 15 minutes I had had enough and heat or not had to get moving again.
The road goes ever on and on
The next section was up about 5km of road with almost no protection from the sun, after a short distance I met the Spanish chap who I first met yesterday descending to La Jonquera. He was coming back down the road as he had decided it was just too hot to go on.
Aarggg!
'Mad dogs and Englishmen' however, and I kept plodding on getting hotter and hotter.
At last a bit of shade
My plan was to camp near the ruin of Mas Pils, which now appears to be a major nesting site for swallows, whether African or European it was hard to tell!
No grass though
There is no water here but I had prepared for that and pitched by the dry river bed near the 'No Camping' sign. It was a nice shaded spot among some trees but the temperature was crazy, as were the flies, pity there weren't even more swallows.

I was driven into the tent after an early dinner but managed to survive the heat and get to sleep ok.
