Day thirty five - Llandielo to Carmarthen

4th April.

Clear frosty morning but the sunshine started to be moderated by lunchtime by cloud spreading in from the west. I didn't have to walk as far today, l could have gone straight down the road, but didn't fancy the A40 or even the B4300 even though it's a cycle route.

Looking back

I worked a convoluted route on minor roads, tracks and footpaths, occasionally walking in the wrong direction altogether!

Oak trees by a very minor road

The rights of way on the map are sometimes totally overgrown or, as in one case where l had walked a mile in the wrong direction to avoid a section of the A40, had been built on, with locked gates, horse paddocks and even a new duck pond to prevent access. I gave up and had to do the short bit on the A40 after all!
Llanfihangle-uwch-Gwili, the church is smaller than the name!

It was a great walk, spring is definitely here, farmers out spreading fertiliser, primroses on the roadsides, the second butterfly of the year, a peacock, and even a herd of dairy cows out grazing. A bit like a costal walk as I went up and down the hills.

When I got to Abergwilli and crossed the A40 there was a sign outside the Bishops Palace for a Rembrandt exhibition, l was there half an hour before they closed and nipped in.

A terrible photo of the real thing

Amazing! Who would have thought I would come across a Rembrandt on my travels.

A good piece of working machinery was more normal.

Arrived in Carmarthen to meet Merlin and finish a great days walk.

20.5 miles walked 600 meters ascent

There’s actually a really fancy railway path planned between Llandeilo and Carmarthen. I thought they had negotiated a way through all the bits of private land and also planned two fancy new bridges over the Towy. If they had finished (or started) it your journey would have been smoother but probably less challenging!
