Day 1, 8th May. Oban to Beinn Breac
Amazing sunny weather with hardly any wind as I signed out at Oban Youth Hostel where, as I realised in the evening when I looked for it, I left my lightweight windproof jacket.

Leaving Oban |
Oban was busy but the traffic wasn't as bad as yesterday, yet.

Glencruitten road |
The walk up the quiet Glencruitten road with all the trees was a delight after the barren Hebridean landscape and what I thought would be a farm track turned out to be newly surfaced and made it easy walking to Connel Bridge.

Connel Bridge |
The hotel restaurant wasn't open but they gave me a cup of coffee to take out and I drank it sitting on a bench overlooking the mouth of Loch Etive. Unfortunately the tide was too high for the Falls of Lora to be impressive.

Rhododendrons |
Across the bridge and a minor road along the north shore of Loch Etive. I had intended to go up the hill here but the loch side walk was so pleasant I stayed on the road instead.
When I did turn up the hill I met a couple in a campervan who invited me to stop for a cup of tea, as I would never turn down such an offer I spent a while putting the world to rights sitting at the side of the road with them.

Tea at the roadside |
There was a track of sorts, that wasn't marked on the map, that made the ascent of Beinn Breac easier than I expected as it was only the top section that required route finding.

A sort of track |
The views from the top were spectacular, from Jura in the south to Mull then all the mainland mountains from Moidart to Ben Cruachan including Ben Nevis in the distance.

View from the top of Beinn Breac |
A short descent took me to my high camp for the night and the discovery of the lack of windproof, annoying! I did wonder about room 101.

High camp |
The hills are very dry and running water is very scarce, I'm glad I brought the water filter.
16 miles walked 1000 meters ascent.
