Day 11 Sunday 4th May
The very cold north east wind blew all day and although there were good sunny periods it felt bitterly cold unless I found a rare sheltered spot.

Morning view |
Just a short walk today, along the road to the ferry. then another short bit to the campsite.
 |
Causeway to Eriskay |
The causeway was only opened in 2002, previously the only access being by boat. When I was here in the mid eighties I remember a general store that sold everything from petrol to petticoats, now there is just a community shop and cafe that, although it was closed for the weekend, didn't seem to stock much at all.

Beach Eriskay |
I arrived at the ferry terminal early and sat in the cold waiting room for a while before getting out the stove for a brew to warm up.
 |
Large lorry coming off the ferry |
An hour's ferry journey and I was on Barra, somehow it felt a much friendlier place. I think the landscape is smaller somehow and more intimate with vegetation in sheltered corners.
 |
Barra |
I could have carried on the Hebridean Way but there was no rush as I wasn't getting the ferry until Wednesday. So instead I headed for a campsite south of the ferry terminal with the intention of coming back to continue the Way.
 |
Hotel |
I went past a community garden and café that was shut then came to a hotel that was open but not for food. Tea and crisps it was then. As I was the only customer there I found out a lot about her and the island's life from the owner.
 |
View from the campsite |
The campsite wasn't officially open as they were doing some renovations so again I was the only one there, although all the facilities were working except the laundry.
9 miles walked 200 meters ascent.
