Hebridean Way 01/05/25

Day 8, Thursday 1st May

A chilly north west  wind this morning with a threatening sky but I got away from the site with everything packed and dry.

Liniclate Hotel and School

A lot of road walking today but it was eased a bit when I found a big Co-op store just before the causeway to South Uist, there was even a bench outside where I could sit and consume my purchases.

Benbecula

On arrival in South Uist the Way takes  two loops inland over 'interesting' boggy ground. The first one up a decent track to a small community wind farm before winding its way through the lochans and bog back to the road near the rocket range control station.

More Hebridean half in half land

After a short road section a minor road leads to a nature reserve and a decent path for a while before it too reverts to bog but then emerges onto the machair and much more agricultural land with lambs gambolling in the odd burst of sunshine.

View of the hills

There were eggs for sale by the road where I emerged and I walked past before realising that as I was heading for a Bunkhouse some eggs would be nice, so I went back to buy half a dozen.

Farming

The hostel is excellent, it is an old blackhouse that has been renovated by the Gatliff Trust into an excellent facility and there was an interesting group of people staying there.

Inside the bunkhouse

16.5 miles walked, 150 meters ascent.
