Hebridean Way 03/05/25

Day 10 Saturday 3rd May

A bright morning with a strong northerly wind.

Howmore hostel

It was an easy walk down the coast on the machair today unfortunately with nothing to act as a windbreak.

Cattle on the machair

It was interesting seeing the way that the small patches of oats were being grown, dried seaweed was spread as fertiliser and it was being ploughed in using tiny two furrow ploughs behind some antique tractors.

Agriculture

It was too early for the wildflower display and only the daisies had put in an appearance but the bird life was magnificent, Lapwing, Curlew, Oystercatcher, Skylarks and Swallows as well as thousands of little waders on the beach.

Beach with seaweed and waders

I had set off in shorts in the morning as the forecast had promised some sunshine and although I stuck with the shorts I ended up with hat gloves and jacket before the end as the wind seemed to get stronger and definitely colder.

View of Barra from near the campsite

I arrived at the campsite just as the cafe was closing so I pitched the tent and hunkered down for the evening. Luckily I had picked up a book from an earlier campsite, it was rubbish but it passed the time!

17.5 miles walked. 100 meters ascent
