Te Araroa 16/11/25

Day 53, Tieke Marae campsite to Matahiwi cafe (1331)

It was a cold misty morning but the sun soon broke through and we managed to get packed and away almost too early as the sun took a while to get into the deep river valley.

Morning at the campsite
When we were packing up the camp a pair of Royal Spoonbills flew down the river into the mist.

The only crew change today was on the kayak which Owen took over from Ruby putting Ruby in with Erik.

Cliffs and bush
Another fantastic day, the best river day so far. This was probably because we were becoming more confident at canoe handling as well as some of exciting rapids that had to be negotiated.

Two boats were nearly swamped by the waves but everyone stayed the right way up, video by Charlie.

Lunch stop
The scenery was awesome again and we had a few good snack stops on the way.
More snacks
The decision was made to take a day less to descend the river so we went on further than originally planned to an excellent campsite at Matahiwi café.
1300 km
Unfortunately the café was closed by the time we arrived but they had left us a huge pot of vegetable soup in the camp kitchen.
River banks becoming more fertile
Erik and I being the senior members of the group stayed in cabins, the rest camped.
Campsite from my cabin
It was a tiring day but after a hot shower and soup extremely satisfying.
