Day 11, Orongo Bay to Helena Bay.
There was some heavy rain overnight but it had cleared by the morning and the day stayed mostly dry with sunny intervals.

Orongo bay campsite |
A path beside the road took me to the junction where the trail follows the Russell Whakapara gravel road over the hills. |
Gravel road |
It is classified as a road but it seems wrong to have standard road signs on what appears to be a forest track but there were almost no vehicles. |
Excellent views |
I came to the end of the gravel road and joined the main Russell Road which only had light traffic although I was attacked by a magpie as I walked past it's territory. It was a very determined bird as well and didn't give up until I was well away.

A magnificent Kauri tree |
My initial plan was to stay at The Farm but it was only just after midday when I arrived and I wasn't very impressed with the site so I pushed on to Helena Bay.
 |
Road walking |
This was an extra 16k making it's rather long 40k day but it was all on roads, the gravel being nicer than tar but none of them had much traffic. |
Keep walking |
The 'trail angels' where I stayed was mainly an artists studio with living accommodation attached. It had a rather decrepit caravan and space for half a dozen tents as well as a good hot shower, toilet and cooking space attached to the caravan.
 |
Home for the night |
I stayed in the caravan as it meant that I wouldn't have to pack up a wet tent in the morning, very comfortable. |
An interesting place |
I was given a bowl of macaroni cheese as well, it was delicious 😋
