Day 24, Reminger Road to Orewa (566)
Hot sunshine as we left the campsite and all headed down the road leaving Hamish, who arrived when I was in bed, packing his bike for his journey north.
Ready for the off |
The trail takes a good path that goes high above the river at times before descending to the village of Puhoi where there was a good store and we all stopped for a a drink and a nibble.
SJ ana Di crossing the river |
There is a possibility of hiring a canoe to travel down the river to Wenderholm but the tidal river was too low and we carried on down the road.
He insisted |
The road went under and then close to the National 1, which here is a motorway, before it vanished into a pair of tunnels.
The Catholic Church at Puhoi |
The N1 vanishing into the hillside |
Around Wenderholm perimeter path after a break under some beautiful Maple trees. It was a gravel path for the first half then a 'tramping track' to the bridge and little shop at Waiwhera.
Beautiful sycamore trees |
View from the Wenderholm perimeter path |
We set off confidently to walk the beach / rocks round to Orewa with the incoming tide.
Ruby on the rocks |
It became more and more 'interesting' the further we got until, after an episode when Ruby dropped her Sunglasses and SJ found them underwater between some rocks, we found ourselves unable to continue.
Easy walking here |
I didn't get any pictures when it got tricky, I must have been too busy trying to avoid drowning. |
Luckily we had just passed a bay where there was a private roadway down to the beach so we added back through the beautiful thigh, or deeper, warm water to the cove.
The private road we used to escape from the beach |
There were two people working on a building above the beach and we were told to wait while he went up to a house with some vicious dogs to ask them to keep them in.
The Orewa coast |
One of them still came out to bark at us but it wasn't really vicious, just defending its territory.
SJ and Di at the Orewa sign |
When we stopped for a late lunch just before the road Ruby did something that none of the five of us had done before. She read the trail notes!
Newzealand honeysuckle? |
Start half an hour before low water. The notes were right if anybody had bothered to read them beforehand.
A reminder of the rocks |
A straightforward walk into Orewa down the road to the campsite after the adventure.
Amazing tree |
