Te Araroa 13/11/25

Day 50, Waimarino to Whakahoro (1241)

A very wet and windy night but I slept well and woke to breakfast in the shelter before saying farewell to the trail angels and setting off down the road.

The walk was a gravel road all day with very little traffic and some lovely trees for shelter.
River Retaruke
The road followed the Retaruke river, a tributary of the Whanganui River that we are canoeing to the coast.

There was plenty of water in the river, it almost looked to be too much but lower down it became obvious that it wasn't particularly high.

The day was a warm and showery, too hot to leave a jacket on between the showers so it was a case of multiple changes.

Everyone got to the Blue Duck Café before it closed and after refreshments walked the short distance down to the campsite.

Only two people opted to use the hut, the rest camping in the field. There were cooking shelters, toilets and a good view of the river we will be canoeing over the next five days.

A game of Yahtze, dinner and early to bed.
