Te Araroa 11/11/25

Day 48, Tongariro Holiday Park to Waimarino (1188)

A damp morning as I set off up the closed N47.

Nice empty road
After about three and a half kilometers a police car drove up and said that the road was closed but he would see what he could do to get us through as a group.
Police escort
Soon afterwards, after our group of seven had got together he came back with a minibus and escorted is all the way to Waitomo.
Where the fire started
There was no problem with the road but the fire service was tidying up equipment and doing an investigation at the roadside where the fire started.
Large wooden kiwi
We arrived at the road end and were met by a television crew who wanted to know our story. We could be on the news this evening!

They did show a clip on the news but only put Erik's bit on it and I was out of sight at the back of the group!

The beginnings of our canoeing river
There is a really good Youth Hostel at Waimarino where we booked in for another day of chilling out.

Youth Hostel kitchen/dining area
It has been an interesting few days.
