Day one hundred and thirty four - Thurso to Mey

 11th July.

A wet night and a horrible grey wet morning, it did improve becoming dryer but remained overcast.

Packed up and down the road to Tesco's for another bit of breakfast and think about a plan for the day.
Found a B&B in May, the place not the month,  and decided to stay there tonight. Of course, as soon as I had done that the weather started to improve.
I didn't think the weather was that bad!
All road again today, not even any nice views with the murk.
Got to Castletown and called into the hotel for coffee and a Danish. Today seemed to be more about eating than anything else. The weather was improving but it didn't last long before closing in again.
On to Dunnet and it was just about lunchtime as I was passing the hotel, it would have been a shame not to stop.
The next café was at Brough but I only left my rucksack outside to make the walk out to Dunnet Head and back a bit easier.
The single track road was quite busy with camper vans going to the lighthouse and back.
Visibility was very poor, Orkney was only a slightly darker patch in the mist.

Who's the guy with the goofy expression?

Most disappointing, when I got back the café was closed. There is a little campsite here which would have been useful, if I had known it existed.

Ruined Mill at Ham
The rain was starting again over the coastal plain so the walk to Mey wasn't very exciting but it is an excellent B&B if you don't mind stags.

End to End completed today at Dunnet Head, but John O'Groats seems to be the 'official' place. I was told that this could be because the road out to Dunnet Head is relatively recent, the lighthouse having been serviced by boat before, or just aggressive marketing by the JoG hotel.

21 miles walked 350 meters ascent.

Wow, Congratulations Roger, I will toast you with a pint tonight.
I must admit that looking on the map at JO'G I wondered what the significance was. Do you get a certificate?
Highest Regards,
Andy
