Hebridean Way. 25/04/25

Day 2, Friday 25th April

Sunshine to start the day.but the cold easterly wind was still here. A long road walk today but there was a nice very minor road for the middle bit.

Hebridean bus shelter, it doesn't matter which way the wind comes from

A rather windy night but I still slept well and got packed up before the dog walkers arrived. A chilly walk to Stornoway, even the lollipop lady was complaining about the cold wind at Tong.

Second breakfast in The Hub cafĂ©

Arrived in Stornoway just as the Hub Cafe opened above the bike shop where I had a second breakfast to fill up as the next cafe won't be until Tarbert.

9 miles across the bog

The Way goes on a very minor single track road for nearly 9 miles to Achmore across desolate peat bog, only a few Curlews for company.

Miles and miles of bu**er all

As I was hoping to climb some of the West Harris hills I didn't follow the Hebridean way but went west along the main road (no footpath) before taking the B road to Loch Roag.

Memorial to the village of Deanston

It was threatening to rain and I continued along the road trying to see if there were any flatish places that weren't too soggy and with some degree of shelter from the strong south westerly wind. I was starting to think that it was impossible when I found a spot that although it didn't tick any boxes, had marks for most of them and a lovely view over a loch.

Evening view

I didn't look at the view for long as it started to rain but I was in the tent by then.

26 miles walked, 450 meters ascent.
