Day 1 Wed 24th April
It was a bright sunny morning but there was a cold easterly wind as I waited for the bus at Stornoway harbour to take me to Ness.

Carved seals at Stornoway harbour |
The bus was surprisingly empty until nearing Ness when it stopped at every other house to pick up kids for the large primary school in Ness.

Butt of Lewis lighthouse |
A short walk up the road to the lighthouse and a sign marking the start of my Hebridean Trail.

The weather was glorious as I walked the road back to Ness and the Wobbly Dog Cafe for a second breakfast. They sold a rather amusing product, Bum Cream, for cyclists. The best bit was the advertising slogan "tested on arseholes not animals".

The Heritage trail starts on a stone track through the Ness "common grazings" which is really a peat bog where they cut peat for burning. There were a few people doing just that today.

Peat bog track |
The visibility was excellent and I could see all the Assynt hills, in fact all the way from the Fisherfield hills to Cape Wrath.

Trail marker |
The path soon vanished into the bog and only some markers gave any indication of where it went, a rather squelchy section, luckily the weather has been dry.

Cliffs! |
Beautiful cliff scenery between the boggy bits.

The bridge to nowhere |
The "path" becomes a track before reaching the "bridge to nowhere" where it joins the tarmac road which I followed on and on and on until I reached a picnic place by the beach at Greiss where I tucked the tent into the dunes.

The road goes ever on and on |
The roads were very quiet and generally have a footpath beside them making the walk easy if somewhat monotonous. I met no-one else walking the trail either on the moor or the road.
