South West Coast Path 22/03/25

 Day 2, Sat 22nd March

A beautiful day today, there was a cold easterly wind but it was still warm enough to wear shorts.

NoIt was an interesting bjus ride through lots of little lanes to Noss Mayo. There were only two of us on the little bus and I learnt a lot about the locals and their problems from the discussion between the driver and the other passenger.

Yealm estuary

It was a bright breezy walk along a relatively level path above the cliffs most of the way to the River Erme.

LThe notice board said that the estuary could only be waded at low water which was three hours away so I walked up to the overpriced café at Mothecombe and after looking at the prices I then walked back to the estuary for a look at the crossing. No problem, I think it should be redefined as a half tide crossing.

Erme estuary

The path on to Bigbury was more in the typical style of coastal paths, lots of steep ups and downs until I reached the caravan park cafe at Challaborough for a welcome cup of coffee.

More cliffs

There is a big campsite on the hill at Bigbury, rather exposed to the prevailing south westerlies, but perfect for the easterly wind tonight.

The tidal island here, Burg island, has a pub called the Pilchard Inn so I had to walk across for a swift half before the tide came in so I could say I had traveled from Burg-head to Burg -island.

15 miles walked 1000 meters ascent
