Day 89, Mt Rintoul Hut to Mid Wairoa Hut (1936)
A cold cloudy morning but the cloud was high and although rain was forecast there was very little.

| Morning from Mt Rintoul Hut |
A short climb up through the alpine forest and out onto a beautiful clear area over Purple Top.
 |
| Purple Top |
It was just like walking on the high Scottish hills, plenty of scree, a cold wind and lovely views.
 |
| Amazing views |

| Trail marker entering the trees |
Back down to the treeline then, again easy walking through the sparse vegetation which got thicker the further down I went.
 |
| The Tarn |
I called in to the Tarn Hut for lunch, a really nice spot that, from the book, looked as if it had been packed last night.
The Tarn was unusual, there don't appear to be any other little isolated lakes like this in the area.
 |
| Through the trees |
Up again to the ridge, all in forest, and along the bumpy top for an hour or so before beginning the ever steepening descent to the River Wairoa.
Across yet another suspension bridge and along the river bank to the hut. Only two
of us tonight.
